Flexibility Scan by COMCAM
Independent energy expertise for an agile and sustainable portfolio
For more than fifteen years, COMCAM has supported industrial and commercial organisations all over Europe in managing their energy portfolios. Our name stands for Commodity, Consulting & Asset Management—three pillars serving one clear goal to streamline operational and financial energy management, helping companies capital on market opportunities and, control risk and reach their sustainability targets. From that base we aspire to become nothing less than the European Energy Leader.
The Flexibility Scan is one of the tools with which we pursue that ambition while creating tangible value for our clients.
Flexibility: what it is, why it matters, and why now
In essence, flexibility is the ability to deliberately change the timing or direction of electricity flows without disrupting the core operations. You align consumption, generation, storage or curtailment with the moments of highest economic or technical value. Whereas flexibility used to be the domain of large power stations and grid operators, it now shifts to the edge of the grid: companies with PV arrays, CHP units, batteries, e-boilers, electric vehicles or process lines controlled by smart systems.
This shift has three drivers:
-
Weather-dependent generation (solar and wind) causes higher price volatility: negative spot prices occur more often, while record price spikes can appear in the same 24-hour window.
-
Regional grids reach capacity at critical times, leading to transport scarcity and even connection restrictions.
-
Policy frameworks such as the EU Fit-for-55 package and CSRD reporting demand demonstrable improvement in decarbonisation and operation efficiency. Without a flexibility strategy, companies systematically miss chances: lower purchase prices remain unused, new revenue streams from ancillary services or congestion programmes stay out of reach, and CO₂ goals become needlessly expensive.
Where exactly is that flexibility?
Flexibility arises on three levels:
-
Technical – Distributed Energy Resources (DERs): PV, CHP, batteries, e-boilers, EV chargers, heat pumps, cold or heat networks and process equipment with variable loads.
-
Digital – Energy Management Systems (EMS): gather data from production, consumption, weather and the market and apply control logic.
-
Economic – Market & grid mechanisms: day-ahead trading, intraday optimisation, imbalance markets, frequency reserves, capacity markets and DSO congestion programmes.
Only an integrated analysis of all three levels reveals the full potential for savings and earnings—and that is exactly what our Flexibility Scan does.
The Flexibility Scan step by step
- Profile analysis
We start with a thorough inventory of your current energy and asset profile. Analyzing 15 minutes data, grid reports and operational constraints we identify the controllable potential of each asset, including technical limitations such as: capacity, cycles, maintenance, process temperatures. Any grid bottlenecks or contract limits are included from the outset, keeping the analysis realistic. - Market optimisation
Next we model various trading and deployment strategies—shifting production from high-price hours to low or negative-price hours, combining on-site or co-located renewables with battery storage, or optimizing assets in balancing or capacity market. Our calculation core accounts for price scenarios, imbalance tariffs, probabilitic forcasts for solar and wind production, while controlling for weather patterns such as cloud cover, wind stillness and seasonal variation. The result is a set of scenarios clearly illustrating the financial and environmental outcomes of each strategic choice. - Demand-Side Response
Not every saving needs a battery. Sometimes it is enough to briefly switch an e-boiler, cooling unit or packaging line off—or speed it up. For each process we examine how shifting load lowers grid stress, reduces transport costs or avoids curtailment. Where a local congestion programme is active—such as GOPACS in the Netherlands—we test whether the flexibility you provide is eligible for compensation. - Implementation & monitoring
Finally we translate the chosen strategy into a practical execution plan. It contains EMS settings, desired metering points, links to trading platforms and a proposal for periodic reports tracking performance, CO₂ impact and financial gains. The data remains yours; COMCAM supplies the models, validation and, where needed, support in talks with the grid operator, supplier or balance-responsible party.
Why COMCAM?
Our strength lies in combining market insight, technical details and independence. As a consultancy that also manages commodities and optimizes assets, we speak the language of your CFO and that of the process operator. We are tied to no supplier, aggregator or hardware brand and have gained experience across diverse sectors—greenhouses, datacenters, logistics/EV-charging stations, chemical industries, fertilizing operations and green gas projects. We use that to guide you safely, transparently and ensuring your path to maximum flexibility is future-proof.
