Reducing energy consumption

Paris Proof Commitment

COMCAM has committed to the ‘Paris Goals’ for the built environment by signing the Paris Proof Commitment. With this, we pledge to the ambitious target of reducing energy consumption in the built environment by two-thirds and cutting associated CO₂ emissions. The ultimate goal is a sustainable, carbon-neutral built environment by 2040: a Paris Proof built environment.

Paris Goals

What is the Paris Proof Commitment?

COMCAM has committed to the ‘Paris Goals’ for the built

much energy savings are required in the built environment to meet the goals of the Paris Agreement. In this agreement, countries have made commitments to reduce harmful emissions.

The Paris Proof Commitment aims to reduce the energy consumption and CO₂ emissions of buildings by two-thirds compared to the current average. This is achieved by measuring the actual energy usage of buildings, rather than relying solely on energy labels. For example, to achieve fully sustainable energy use, an existing office building should only consume 70 kWh per square meter per year.

An increasing number of organizations – leaders in the sustainability of the built environment – are signing the Paris Proof Commitment and committing to its standards. This brings us closer to achieving the overall goal.

Paris Proof Commitment

What does this mean?

Together with all signatories, we will each, in our respective roles, measure actual energy usage and accelerate the sustainability of real estate by 2040, all within the CO₂ budget for the built environment in the Netherlands. For existing buildings, this means focusing on actual energy usage and implementing significant sustainability measures. For new construction and renovation projects, the focus will be on material-related CO₂ emissions, which will be assessed against the annual targets of the CO₂ budget. Additionally, we will mobilize our clients, partners, and other stakeholders to also work towards becoming Paris Proof.

Concrete steps

  1. We are transparent about our own energy usage and CO₂ emissions.
  2. We achieve the Paris Proof ambition by developing roadmaps.
  3. We monitor and report on progress.
  4. We promote Paris Proof to clients, partners, and the industry.
